- What is Gold Rush and what problem does it solve?
Libraries spend enormous amounts of money on electronic databases and online full-text resources. Gold Rush helps patrons find what content is embedded within these resources through a Web-based public search interface and through a full functioning link resolver (OpenURL compliant). Library staff can use Gold Rush to help manage their subscriptions to electronic resources, compare the content of title lists between different electronic products and can manage the content of their public interface and link resolver.
- Why are you selling Gold Rush in two different packages?
Different libraries have different needs. You may already be using some other commercial service for public access to journal title lists or a link resolver. In this case, Gold Rush Reports would be perfect for you. However, Gold Rush is one of the most cost effective solutions for a Web-based journal title list or link resolver. In this case either Gold Rush Basic or Gold Rush Complete may better meet your needs.
We are also willing to talk with you if you have a customized need for just one portion of the system.
- What technical expertise is needed to use Gold Rush?
We manage the Gold Rush system on your behalf. You do not have to run a local server or have any training in programming, Unix administration, NT administration or other technical expertise. We will provide you with a login to the Web-based Gold Rush Staff Toolbox that will let you manage your own environment. You can create new users with different capabilities as needed.
- How often are title lists from publishers, aggregators and abstracting/indexing services updated?
Gold Rush is an online real time service accessing over 1,300 databases. Whenever we update a title list it immediately becomes available to you. There is no waiting. Currently, only titles with ISSNs are added to Gold Rush. Title lists are updated on different frequencies depending on the publisher, aggregator or indexing/abstracting service. Lists are updated on a quarterly basis unless a provider has less frequent updates themselves. Selected high-profile services such as EBSCO, Gale Group and OCLC FirstSearch will be done more frequently. For a list of databases loaded within the last 6 months see: http://grstaff.coalliance.org/dbloadreport.cfm.
- Can I purchase Gold Rush as a single library or must I be part of a consortium?
Gold Rush may be purchased as part of a local consortium or you may acquire it on a stand alone basis. There are some benefits to being part of a consortium purchase such as a lower cost for the annual subscription fee and the ability for patrons to take on different identities in the public interface if they have library cards for more than one library.
- Can Gold Rush create an A-Z list of full-text journals to which I have access and not show the indexed-only titles?
Gold Rush has many different kinds of searching in its public interface. These include a variety of keyword searches, browse searches and ISSN searches. By using the Journal Title Browse search and limiting to full-text you can create online real-time A-Z lists of titles to which you subscribe.
- Why do you include where journals are indexed as well as where the full-text is available?
Gold Rush does not discard any metadata from publishers, aggregators
and indexing/abstracting services. We maintain titles that are available
in both full-text as well as just indexed. This has many benefits.
- It allows you to compare the full range of content between different
title lists for collection development purposes in Gold Rush Reports.
- It allows the patrons to see where something is indexed as well as where
the full text resides. In cases where there is no full-text online a patron
may be able to find an abstract of an article or may get ideas of what indexes
to use to extend their research.
- What if our library subscribes to a product for which a title list does not exist in Gold Rush?
We are constantly adding new title lists to Gold Rush. If you find something that has not yet been loaded please email us at goldrush@coalliance.org and we will work on finding and adding that title list if it is available.
- Can I load my own title lists?
Yes, you can load your own title lists and also add titles to an existing title list.
- Can I load my list of serials from my local OPAC in Gold Rush?
Yes, we can load your list of serials from your local OPAC. Simply export your list of serials from your OPAC and send us the tab delimited file. We only need ISSN's and titles to load the list into Gold Rush. We can create custom url's for most local systems, so that when a patron does a search in Gold Rush, they link directly to your catalog if you own the item locally. You can also own your own list of serials or add journals to an existing list.
- How much content is currently in Gold Rush?
Gold Rush currently has title lists from over 1,300 aggregators, primary publishers, and indexing/abstracting services representing over 50,000 unique journal titles.
- Who is the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries?
The Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries is a non-profit consortium
of eleven libraries in Colorado and Wyoming. It is a long-term partnership
of academic, special and public libraries with a history of working in
concert to share resources through cooperative purchasing, special projects,
systems management and consulting services. We are members of the International
Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC). More information about the Colorado
Alliance may be found at http://www.coalliance.org.
- Why is Gold Rush so inexpensive?
We developed the service on behalf of the libraries in our consortium.
As a non-profit organization we are not trying to make profit and any
revenue from this project goes to support the project or help the member
libraries of the Colorado Alliance. Gold Rush is a not-for-profit initiative.
- What if I have other questions?
No FAQ can cover every topic. Please send additional questions to
goldrush@coalliance.org for more help. We have also established a whole
separate FAQ section for Gold Rush Linker to answer questions about our
link resolver.
